Hoi Polloi (noun): the many, the masses, the working class.
Hoi Polloi Brewing Taproom and Beat Lounge is located in the Lorin District of South Berkeley, CA. Our beers are brewed on our off-site 7 barrel brewery located in Oakland, CA. This allows us to produce a variety of beers that (we hope!) will be enjoyed by a wide audience. We also host a carefully curated and rotating selection of wine and ciders.
Come in, say hello, and sit for a session. We’ve been waiting to meet you.

- Chocolate Porter to the People 4.9% ABV / 30 IBU
- I Said Brr! Cold Pale Ale 5.2% ABV / 35 IBU
Bridging worlds and eras, this Cold Pale Ale is a masterful study in brewing dialectics, where the accumulation of quantitative changes results in a revolutionary qualitative leap. It begins with profound respect for tradition, built upon a classic foundation of Rahr Pilsner malt. Yet, a significant portion of flaked rice—a staple in revered Japanese lagers—is introduced not as a simple substitute, but as a deliberate agent of change. This grain bill is designed for a single purpose: to achieve a brilliantly crisp, light body and a supremely dry finish that forms the canvas for a modern hop spectacle. The true synthesis, however, lies in its fermentation. Defying centuries of categorical dogma, this ale is powered by the legendary lager yeast, Safale W-34/70. By fermenting this robust strain at a temperature that blurs the lines between ale and lager traditions, the beer achieves a pristine, clean profile that allows the bold, quantitative wave of New World hops to undergo a qualitative transformation. A torrent of Cryo Sabro, Mosaic, and Citra converges, not on a sweet, fruity ale base, but on a sharp, crisp foundation. The result is not confusion, but clarity: a revolutionary beer that is simultaneously crisp and bursting with aromatic intensity, paying homage to history while boldly charting a new course for the future of craft beer.
- People's Park Pale Ale 5.2% ABV / 35 IBU
Born from the defiant spirit of Berkeley's People's Park-a 1969 grassroots sanctuary forged by activists and dreamers-this pale ale is a liquid ode to community resilience. Bursting with tropical mango, zesty grapefruit, and piney earthiness from Citra, Mosaic, and CTZ hops, its aroma mirrors the park's vibrant energy. Layers of juicy tangerine and honeyed malt dance on the palate, and balanced by a crisp, smooth body. Sunlit gold in color, it glows like the park's storied gatherings under California skies, crowned by a creamy head reminiscent of chalked hopes on pavement. Light yet inviting, with lively carbonation echoing decades of laughter and debate, this ale invites you to toast the past and fuel the future.
